Adult braces

Snaggletooth

I had braces for three years when I was in middle school. This was a time in my life that basically everyone had them so it didn´t seem like a big deal. In fact, in the very beginning I was even excited to have them put on. Towards the end, though, I would have ripped them off myself given the chance.

There is nothing like that first day when you get your braces off and your teeth feel so big and smooth. Plus you can eat all the things that were either forbidden or too difficult to have. Even better is being able to smile and know that your teeth are straight and beautiful.

My teeth had pretty much remained where they should have without a lot of movement (even without wearing a retainer) for the last 12ish years. That is until 5 wisdom teeth decided to grow in (that´s right, 5. I had one for good luck I guess). There obviously was not space for these new, invading teeth so things started to shift around.

Now I feel like my once nice smile is jacked up. Most people would say I am exaggerating or that it isn´t so bad, but I notice in pictures that one of my front teeth has shifted forward, thus pushing another back. I am afraid that if I leave this any longer it is going to become a full on snaggletooth. I live in Spain, not Britain. It is unacceptable!

Taking the plunge

Like I said, I have felt self conscience about my teeth for a while now and have been toying with the idea of adult braces to fix my grill. The downsides being that:

-they are expensive even though I have insurance.
-they are annoying for eating and cleaning and can be downright painful at times
-ummm, I will be an adult with braces.

Then, the other day I got a Groupon in my email that contained an offer for braces. Jose and I discussed this deal for a few days. It was only  after a dinner party we hosted where a friend´s wife  who also has braces told me about her (mostly) positive experience that I took the plunge and bought the coupon.

I go for my first consultation next week. So there you have it. At the ripe old age of 27 I am getting braces again. I am hoping that this will not take another 3 years since my teeth are really not that bad. It isn´t like this is a necessary procedure so I am glad that I was able to save quite a bit of money through Groupon. Love them! If you don´t get their deals, you should.

  1. You are not alone. My friend Emi in Madrid (46 years old, two teenaged sons) just got them, I believe for the first time. She calls them "braquets" (I don't even know i'm spelling the word correctly en español). Good luck, Allie! You'll look even MORE fabulous! Keep us posted!

    1. It is strange how after going back and forth for about a week the Groupon was delivered to my email! I know it will be worth it and this time I will make sure to wear my retainer!!!

  3. 5 wisdom teeth? This is a case where you absolutely need to consult a dentist. It is normal to feel anxious, or doubtful, about sensitive procedures like putting on braces. But with a licensed specialist, you have nothing to worry about. That was a great deal you got for a discounted coupon. How did the consultation go?

    1. Hello Lindsay,
I have now had the top set of braces for about a month and so far so good. And yes, I had 5 wisdom teeth but only 4 of them were removed! I am hoping that my teeth end up looking fabulous at the end of this process : )
