A weekend in Portugal

This weekend we decided to take a quick trip to Portugal for a few days to get away from all the apartment stuff we have been doing recently. We needed to relax and disconnect for a bit. We drove the two hours to Jose's parents' apartment by the beach, taking our own food to save money (this was definitely a cheap trip). Our plan was to just hang out and maybe buy some sheets and towels for the new place since Portugal is well known for these kind of products. (People actually make pilgrimages across the border to buy household goods since the prices are much better).

We arrived on Friday afternoon and settled in for the night. On Saturday we took a long walk down to the beach with Cooper. He loved it and was running wild until he decided to ingest some old, crusty, dead crab and then he gagged for about 20 minutes. He's not the brightest dog there ever was but he sure is cute.

As you can see, the weather wasn't too great so we were the only people out on the beach. It was cold and windy but we stuck it out. Later we did some shopping and did end up buying sheets (for half what they cost us in Spain!!) and a new tablecloth. Everyone around us was speaking Spanish since it was a holiday weekend and other people chose to take advantage of it as well. I am not exactly sure why Portugal is famous for its textiles but it is and they are well worth the trip.

We also went to our FAVORITE Indian restaurant that we always visit when we are in Portugal. It may sound weird but we go to Portugal to eat Indian food. Since there are a lot of English and Dutch tourists most of the food offered is geared toward them. There are a lot of pubs, sandwich shops etc. We often wonder what typical Portuguese food is really like. In any case, at lunch we ate a lot and enjoyed every minute.

The rest of the weekend was spent just relaxing and reading (I finished 2 books). The weather was not very cooperative so we pretty much stayed inside. It was nice to get out of town for a while and not have to spend money to do so. We are now counting down to our next time off work for Holy Week. Only 20 days!
