WONDERFUL Wedding weekend in the north of Spain

Last Friday when Jose got out of work, we got on a plane and headed to the north of Spain for our friends' wedding. We met Manu back in North Carolina and have stayed in contact with him and his now-wife Lucia since then. This was the first wedding that Jose and I went to together as a couple (except our own) because before we had always been separated. We were very excited to help our friends celebrate. They are a wonderful couple!

The wedding itself took place in Pamplona but we flew into Bilbao and took a bus there. We had already visited the Basque Country (and north) before but I was again struck by how different it is when compared to the south of Spain. If Sevilla is hot, dry and brown, the north is cool, lush and GREEN! Coming from Michigan where we have trees (not just palms or olive trees like in Andalucia) I feel like I can relate better to the landscape of the north, apart from the mountains and hills.

The night before the wedding we stayed at the bride and groom's apartment which was a treat (thank you again guys!). The bride stayed with her family but we were lucky enough to be able to spend some time with Manu who was incredibly relaxed. The next morning we got ready and were picked up by some awesome friends of the couple who ended up becoming our BFFs for the day/night.

The ceremony was about a half hour away at the Monasterio de Leyre which is beautiful. The mass was very nice, the bride and groom looked perfect (and in love) and afterwards we went to the reception. Unfortunately our camera died right after the ceremony so we don't have pictures of anything after that. At the reception the food was great, the dancing was fun and the whole event was full of the couple's personal touches. It was a great night (minus my lost purse for a minute ; ) ) and we made a lot of friends as tends to happen when lots of people are together imbibing. Congratulations again to Manu and Lucia! We had the best time at your wedding.

The next day Jose and I woke up with inevitable hangovers and caught a rough busride back to Bilbao where we spent the day with our friends Ibon, his girlfriend Elonia and their super-cute son Manex (all Basque names). We went to several different bars where we ate pintxos (the north's take on tapas) and then walked around the city before heading to the airport to catch another flight home. It was a long weekend but I am so glad we got to see our friends and have such a great time.

Another update: On Monday I turned in all my paperwork at the Foreigner's Office and became a legal resident. Yesterday I had an interview for the same position I was offered last year which I accepted so for the next school year I will be conducting English conversation classes at an all girls elementary school. Yayyyy!
