Spring in the south of Spain

For the last week or so the weather has been amazing here in the south of Spain. Sunshine, great temperatures and days that are getting longer can only mean one thing: spring is here. Spring can be a fickle season for us; it doesn't usually last very long (before the heat starts to tighten its grip) and tends to be rainy. That means we are trying to take advantage of this perfect weather while it lasts!

This weekend we decided to get our balcony terrace ready for use. We have a pretty small space outside our apartment and last year we bought a table and chairs to go out there. During our first warm season in the new place, we didn't take advantage of our outdoor space because we get A LOT of afternoon sun which meant that things were pretty bright and steamy exactly when we wanted to be outside. Now that the association has been established in our complex we can finally get a retractable awning put up so that we be outside without getting burned. This awning will also allow us to have plants, too.

Yesterday we headed to Spain's answer to Home Depot: Leroy Merlin, where we bought a few hanging planters. This morning we went to our local market to try to find some sun-loving plants and were successful. The stand that we visited had a lot of different things to choose from but I wanted to get plants that would flower and give us a bit of color out on our terrace. After coming home we transfered them and voila!

I don't know the actual names of the plants but was assured that they would all be resistant to the sun. I don't exactly have the greenest thumb so I am hoping that the person who sold me these flowers was right. On a side note, our dwarf orange tree is still doing really well and we just moved it outside as well (it spent the winter and the rain inside our laundry space).

As you can see from the wider angle we also have a small storage cupboard outside which I would like to get covered since it is a bit ugly. You may have also noticed the empty bird cage. I am still bummed about our canary Skittles but we are considering getting another bird. The only problem is knowing that it will be protected from a similar attack that killed our first canary.

We can't wait to spend time outside on our terrace now that the weather has improved. With the awning things will only get better (we are just waiting on a price to get it installed). Wish me luck in keeping my new plants alive!

  1. How lucky you are to be there for Semana Santa and the Feria de abril! Some day I would like to see them.
