About me

My name is Allie and though I am no expert writer, I am here sharing my experiences as an immigrant living in Spain where I moved permanently in the spring of 2012. I made the big move after getting married to my wonderful husband, Jose. We met while studying in North Carolina, then survived a year in a long distance relationship before I came to Seville as an exchange student in 2010. After my year (and student visa) were up we faced a big decision: what did the future hold for us? In that case it meant 2 weddings and a big move. Allieinthesouthofspain.blogspot.com has chronicled it all.

In March 2016 we doubled the size of our family when our twins Vera and Laura were born. Recently we added another girl to the mix, Carla, who was born in July 2019. I took a break from blogging much since working and being a mom, wife, friend, teacher, etc. was more important but now I am back. Welcome to this wild adventure that is my life abroad! Follow along as my family grows up mixing two cultures and languages, as we start another international house hunt and as we survive the day to day.

I like to think this blog is one part travel blog, one part diary, one part letter back home. It's where I keep in touch with the people I can't see or speak to everyday. Where is home? Michigan in the United States. Where am I now? Living in Seville, Spain. That's where the south comes from in my blog's name. I hope you enjoy my thoughts and my take on life in general. Feel free to leave comments or questions.

  3. Hi Allie,
Great stuff on here--I've been browsing around to get ideas, as my husband and I are considering expatting in Spain (from Seattle). I don't want to bog down your comments section with my questions--is there a better way to contact you? Thanks!

  4. Hey Allie,
My name is Joe Pinzone and I'm casting an international travel show about expats moving abroad. We'd love to film in Spain and wanted to know if you could help us find expats who have moved there within the last 1-2 years. The show documents their move to a new country and will place the country in fabulous light. I wanted to know if you could help spread the word to expats living there or are close to moving. If you'd like more information, please give me a call at 212-231-7716 or skype me at joefromnyc. You can also email me at joepinzone@leopardusa.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  5. Thank you for this blog. I am 46, and looking for opportunities for my third career in the next few years. I lived in Italy when I was younger and I have been looking into where I could move. Spain has been top of the list.

Of course; buying a home, finding some work (I am a therapist social worker but I would change careers again), connecting to people, etc. The idea of moving to someplace in Andalusia appeals because I love history and the ocean. I would love to talk with you individually.

    1. Hi Dragonfly. I apologize for not replying sooner. Your comment got lost in the shuffle as my girls were born at the beginning of March. If you have any questions about the south of Spain feel free to send me an email at alexandra.d.garber@gmail.com

      Thanks for reading!

  7. Agree on a suitable moving-in date that works for everyone before signing the contract. You want time to unpack and get settled before starting your studies, but not too early that you end up paying for a house during summer if you’re not going to be there.
